The annual members meeting will be held on Saturday January 28 at 2pm at Karen Colliers house. We will be electing a President, Treasurer and Secretary. It was discussed that the Presidents position needs to be held by a Lawrence resident who can be active in the group runs. Coleen will send out an email to the listserv and the facebook page letting everyone know which positions are open and when the meeting is. Karen put forth …

Day two of the three-day race was done. A cloudy night engulfed northern Arkansas’ wild and mountainous Ozark National Forest as completely as if it lay 10 miles deep beneath a chilly lightless sea. Yet one runner still fought. Not the course or the trails; he’d lost those. Now, Mike DeMeritt, 48, West Chicago, battled on through the tomblike darkness and humid, low-40-degree temperatures without a light, warm clothes, or food, except for a water bottle and a few swigs of honey. It wasn’t just darkness he …
Since it's the holiday season, I've been getting all soft and sappy feeling. So I thought I'd take advantage and write a bit about the importance and awesomeness of my vast running family. If I had to guess, I would say I'm friends with 100+ trail and ultra runners in the Kansas/Missouri area. And if you have any experience with the trail/ultra community you'll know that any of those people would probably donate an arm and part of a leg to help out a fellow runner.
I'm always amazed when I think about how very different many of my running …
I think I should start this report with the day before the race.
h2. FRIDAY
Friday was a fairly busy day at work. But it was also the day of a KU basketball game. Work was wanting me to stay at home and available incase we had any hiccups with the live game coverage that "KUsports.com":http://www2.kusports.com provides. Because the game was starting at 7pm I had to go mark the course earlier than I had originally planned.
I cruise on over to Prosoco Inc. headquaters to meet "Gary":http://www.ultrastory.com to get the pink tape and the flags …
Our upcoming Pi Day River Rotation Trail Run is going to be a huge success, if this morning's Pi Day Preview Run is any indicator. What a fun run!
Despite temps in the low 30s and blustery wind from the North, under sullen cloudy skies, nearly 20 Hawks and friends of Hawks showed up to see what Race Director Laurie "Pixie Hawk" Euler has in mind for her math-minded March half-marathon, set for the first Saturday following Pi Day. Pi Day is March 14 -- the race is set for March 19.
The Greek letter Pi is the symbol for …
Sad that we have to have politics in running -- something that's all about friends and freedom, isn't it?
So for the record, in writing, here are the politics of the Lawrence Trail Hawks.
“What do you think of the trail so far?” Gary “Story Hawk” Henry asked.
We were shuffling along the north shoreline of Clinton Lake, Gary providing the first of two “previews” he’d lead that morning. We’d be doing some trash pick-up later, but at the moment we were engaged in a little footwork. At our current position on the “5K-ish” course, the terrain involved big, white, untrustworthy rocks mixed in with little, white, untrustworthy rocks—enough of a challenge that even the venerable Story Hawk had a couple ankle-wiggles. It was a beautiful mid-September morning, Clinton Lake seemed within reach of …
Good fuel is as essential to a nice long run as quality shoes. And, just as there are seemingly endless choices for running shoes, there's also choice after choice for on-the-go fueling. Bars, gels, chews, beans, sports drinks — the list goes on and on.
But have you ever taken a good look at what that expensive, prepackaged fuel has for ingredients? If you flip the package over and start perusing the ingredient list, there's a good chance that you'll see some ingredients that sound like they belong inside your the soles of your shoes rather than in your stomach. …
Headlamps! Everyone has one or wants one. What's good what's bad? Should I even have one?
Anyway, When it comes to light, you wanna find something that has the highest lumen count, using the lightest batteries that'll last for as long as you'll need to be on the trail. Each and every one of those attributes fight against each other.
So what does that all mean? Well the higher the lumen count, the brighter your light will be. If the count is really high, then it either needs lots of batteries, or goes through batteries, like me through french fries …
