Sometimes you are the runner; sometimes the volunteer
Sometimes you get the finisher’s medal
Sometimes you clap and cheer
’Cause it takes both to make a race; takes both to make it pay
Shlepping water jugs or running trails
There’s glory either way
Yesterday we ran the race; loved the gritty sweaty miles
Next week we’re working at Lands End
Slinging water, food and smiles
The other way is selling out to a for-profit company
Be greeted at each aid station
By some stranger-employee
Wouldn’t you rather have your buds taking care of you
Just like you will care for them
When you’re the aid station crew
My friends, that’s just the way it is; the way it’s got to be
Taking turns to run and do the work
Makes us a running family
Sometimes you are the runner; sometimes the volunteer
Sometimes you get the finisher’s medal
Sometimes you clap and cheer.
